Buena Vista Resident (a Smeltertown Descendant) Writes the Book on "La Esmelda"

“Smeltertown: Making and Remembering a Southwest Border Community” a book by Monica Perales, Professor of History, U. of Houston, is the focus of a reading and book signing by the author Saturday October 23 7:30pm at Camino Real Gallery, 3474 Doniphan Drive in Buena Vista, El Paso.

Perales, whose grandparents worked and lived in Smeltertown, uses oral history—the stories and recollections of residents, to tell the story of “La Esmelda” (as it was known) from the 1880’s through its annihilation in 1973. An award-winning researcher and scholar, Perales also presents extensive archival research to illuminate a historical stage for the voices and stories of the people.

A reception and book signing follow the reading. Copies of the book will be for sale and signing at the Gallery, with proceeds benefitting the work of the Centro.
